INTRODUCTION TO EVANGELICAL MINISTRY

MINISTERIAL ETHICS AND ETIQUETTE

o        One of the first things to keep in mind is to apply the principle of the "golden rule": Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. As children of  the heavenly Lord, Evangelical ministers are to love and show love to men (Rom. 56: 5).

o        Evangelical ministers should know that they are laborers in God's vineyard and must channel their efforts towards soul winning.

o        Evangelical ministers should not deal with people's personal problems publicly, they should minister in confidence so as to avoid embarrassment. Whatever they are doing, they should seek for God's wisdom, like Solomon in 1st Kings 3:9 and Nathan in 2nd Samuel 12: 1 - 12.

o        A true Evangelist  will know his people and bring them into maturity through the teaching he gives.

o        A good Evangelist must have a teachable spirit and be able to admit any criticism from fellow ministers  or ordinary persons.

o        Evangelists must not covet or steal other people's sheep. All they need to do is to be committed, teach Bible truth, live right, and people will believe in them.

o        A good Evangelical minister must be a model in word and action.

EVANGELIST

Bible Text: Eph. 4: 11, 12; 1 Corinthians 12: 28

The word, "Evangelist" occurs only 3 times in the new testament

1.      Eph. 4:11

2.      Acts 21: 28 where the Bible speaks of "Philip, the Evangelist."

3.      2 Tim. 4: 5, where Paul Told Timothy, who was the pastor of a new testament church, at that time, to "...do the work of an Evangelist."

Definition: The meaning of the word, "Evangelist" is one who brings the evangel (the good news). In other words, an evangelist is a messenger of good tidings. He brings the message of the redeeming grace of God and his favorite theme is salvation in its simplest form.

In discussing the office of Evangelist, we are going to consider Philip as a model who was an evangelist by call and not by the laying of hands or prophecy (Act 8: 5-8). Philip had just one message, Jesus Christ.

a.      Philip's message to the Samaritans: Acts 8:5, "Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ unto them."

b.      Philip's message to the Eunuch Acts 8:35. "Then Philip opened his mouth and began to show him the scripture, and preached unto him Jesus."

c.       One notable characteristic of the Evangelist is that, no matter what scripture they begin with, they preach Jesus. That is just their calling and their message.

The supernatural equipment accompanying the Evangelists ministry include miracles and gifts of healing. Of course, these two spiritual gifts can equally go with any other office.

"And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did" (Acts 8:6).

The Evangelist, Philip, was equipped with the particular spiritual gifts needed for his ministry - working of miracles and gifts of healing. Due to those manifestations in his life and ministry, people rallied round him to hear the word of God.

True Evangelists Must Preach The Word

In the ministry of the Evangelist, the preaching of the Word  of God is very essential. Divine power will draw a crowd.
